Organizing institution: The Fralin Museum of Art at the University of Virginia
An exhibition of masks, sculptures, and ancestor shrines that reflect African traditions of creating images of deceased ancestors to provide a sense of historical continuity. The images range from naturalism to abstraction to symbolic representation. This exhibition includes some rare items from the Museums collection and several outstanding pieces on loan from Hampton University Museum.
