Organizing institution: The Fralin Museum of Art at the University of Virginia
German, Dutch and Flemish old master prints from 1500 to 1700 exhibit technical innovation and a detailed realism coupled with an eerie aura of magic that coexists with a strong feeling for nature and reality. In contrast, Italian old master prints are characterized by the elegance, intellectual coherence, faith and even scholarly magic they portray.
Yet, there was quite a bit of artistic and personal interchange among Italian printmakers and printmakers from other European countries.
“The Power of the North: German, Dutch and Flemish Old Master Prints” allows viewers to decide if Italian elegance is matched by German, Dutch or Flemish power and precision.
The exhibit is accompanied by a gallery talk by Stephen Margulies, the exhibit curator at the University of Virginia Art Museum, on Sunday, Sept. 11, at 2 p.m.
