John Singleton Copley
(Boston, Massachusetts, 1738 - 1815, London, England)
John Singleton Copley was born in Boston, MA in 1738 to Richard and Mary Singelton Copley. After Richard died, Mary married Peter Pelham in 1748, who was a widower. Pelham was an English portrait painter and mezzotint engraver, who was also a close associate of John Smibert.
It is believed that Copley received instruction from his stepfather in both portrait painting and engraving. In 1775, Copley was already a successful portrait painter in Boston, he went to London and continued to work and increase his reputation. There he painted portraits and historical subjects. In 1776 he became an associate member of the Royal Academy and a full member in 1783.
