Artist, philosopher, Adrian Piper is a pioneering figure in the conceptual art movement of the 1960s and at the time, was one of the few African American women involved in the artistic practice. She describes herself as a colored woman artist with a political consciousness informed by the civil rights, antiwar and feminist movements. She works in multiple media, including photography, performance, drawing, and installation. Often confrontational, her work critiques the constructed nature of accepted racial, sexual and class norms. --Fralin Curatorial Department, 2010
