Born in East Prussia in 1867, Kathe Kollwitz was regarded with suspicion by both the Kaiser and the Nazis. Her proletarian and pacifist sympathies were expressed in powerful drawings, woodcuts, etchings, and lithographs, many of which were destroyed when her house in Berlin was bombed in 1943. Sorrow, a black chalk drawing on buff (originally blue-grey) paper, is among the works that have found their way into American collections since her death in 1945
