One of the most famous Native American potters, Maria Martinez of San Ildefonso Pueblo, along with her husband, Julian, developed the polished matte black-on-black ware style in 1918-19. Maria made the pots and Julian painted the stylized deisgns. Due to an increased popularity of their work, Maria and Julian began signing their pieces in 1925. All works from 1925 until Julian's death in 1943 are signed "Marie + Julian." Maria used the named "Marie" because she thought it would encourage non-Native American purchasers to become patrons of her art.
